After posing for pics and handing out hugs with the grandparents in Fairfield, Iowa we asked Siri to lead us to two iconic food destinations in Ottumwa, Iowa--The Canteen and Graham's Dairy Freez. Siri delivered us to both places and the rest is Bucket List history.
We went to The Canteen because of my aunt. Her stories about their legendary loose meat sandwiches . Thanks Aunt Brenda. :) I highly recommend the Canteen Burger and the Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie à la mode.
On the way home to KC, after taking a multitude of pictures and videos, I used the iMovie app on my phone to create a video. I uploaded the video to YouTube and embedded it below. See my view from one of 16 bar stools at the Canteen counter.
The thing that made me feel like I was stepping back in time the most was how we paid. Not a single ticket was written. All orders were done by calling out to each other, similar to the Cheezborger SNL skit. :) When it was time to go, patrons simply went to the cash register and reported what they had ordered. Honor system. Small, cozy building. This TRUST felt SO FINE. My educator brain jumped in--"The role of trust in the classroom is significant, just like it is at The Canteen. It feels good. It makes you want to come back. Thread the theme of trust through your classroom and professional learning as much as possible this year."
Next, we went to Graham's Dairy Freez thanks to my colleague, Kris Roberts, who said I HAD to go there. Thanks, Kris! I highly recommend the Cherry Bomb. I'd never seen anything like it before. Absolutely out of this world! Check it out....
Happy summer travels and eats, my friends!
